Restoring Rivers to a Natural State

A healthy river provides nourishment to the land, wildlife and people of the surrounding communities. Rivers that are able to flow freely will thrive and allow other aspects of life to thrive as well. For example, property value, recreational activities and local businesses all benefit from a healthy, flowing river.

Dams and other man-made structures interrupt the natural functions of rivers. Dams can harm not only water quality and opportunities for recreation on a river, but are often times detrimental to fish and wildlife. There are about 75,000 old, unused dams in the United States. The effect of these dams on the surrounding environments is devastating.

The good news is that the concern of rivers being obstructed has caught National attention. The process of removing dams has been slow; lots of governmental red tape and protests from people who wonder why you would want to remove a perfectly good dam. Fortunately, our rivers have some powerful organizations looking out for their best interest. In fact, in 2011 an astonishing 1,000 dams had already been demolished, unleashing the water that was meant to flow!

In his essay “The Dawn of Dam Removal”, Bruce Babbitt writes that “in the space of two decades, dam removal has evolved from a novelty to an accepted means of river restoration.” This is great news for the many communities who need and want to rediscover their rivers. It’s also great news for the fish and wildlife that once occupied these old riverbeds. Salmon that have been gone from rivers for hundreds of years are returning to their spawning runs!

Dam removal has become a top priority for American Rivers, an organization focused on protecting and restoring our rivers. American Rivers believes that “removing outdated or obsolete dams can bring significant benefits to communities, including public safety, clean water, flood protection, wildlife, recreation, and jobs.” We agree!

Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours

On June 7th, 2012 we hosted the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce Business after Hours event. This gives chamber members a chance to check out local businesses and see what they are all about.

We served over 40 people our Ultimate Fajita Buffet lunch for dinner and gave a tour of our outfitter office and store, picnic area, boathouse and bed and breakfast.

Folks were excited to be here and we were excited to host this fun, local event! John Anicito, one of our managers, answered questions about our company and he made it to the paper! Way to go John! Check out our write up in the Chaffee County Times!

Great Rafting Season is Anticipated!

We’re excited to be kicking off yet another fun-filled summer of Colorado whitewater rafting at The Adventure Company! I wanted to share an article from the Denver Post that pretty much sums up what our thoughts are about this summer and the water flows we will see! I wouldn’t be surprised if you all have heard that Colorado didn’t get tons of snow this winter, but what you may not realize is that this doesn’t mean the rafting season will be poor. In fact, because of the more moderate flows, compared to last years epic high water, we will be able to run all of our advanced and expert trips. Also, our beginner and intermediate trips will be at a reasonable flow for beginners and families with children.

USA Pro Cycling Challenge

The Colorado Rocky Mountains hosted the 2011 inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

For seven consecutive days, from August 22-28, 2011, 135 of the world’s top athletes raced across 518 miles through the majestic Rockies. This inaugural race in Colorado featured the best of the best in professional cycling, competing on a challenging course through some of America’s most beautiful scenery, including cities such as Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge and Steamboat Springs. Nearly one million spectators viewed this race from the roadsides along the route while 161 countries and territories broadcasted the race on television, including NBC and Versus. The USA Pro Cycling Challenge was one of the largest cycling events in United States history. Spectators of the race saw Olympians, World Champions and the Tour de France podium winners Cadel Evans, Andy Schleck and Frank Schleck.

This year the race is set to run from August 20-26, 2012. The host cities will consist of Durango, Telluride, Montrose, Crested Butte, Gunnison, Aspen, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Colorado Springs, Golden, Boulder, and Denver. The race will be coming through Buena Vista again this year during Stage 3 of the race from Gunnison to Aspen.

If you are planning a vacation late this summer, this event is something to consider in your schedule.

High Water 2011

With last winter yielding the best Colorado snowpack in years, we knew we were in for an epic whitewater rafting season! We were not disappointed! The Arkansas River levels were above 3,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) for almost 2 months! 3,000 cfs is an amazing, fast, splashy level! The hits were huge, the waves were glassy!
