You know you want to spend your summer vacation in the Colorado Mountains, and there are all these pictures in your head about what a real Wild West experience should include. However, it’s hard to come up with a complete bucket list. This is why we decided to share our favorite adventures in and around Summit County.

.
1. Hike a 14er

Climbing a Fourteener is one of the most important bucket list items when in Colorado. Of course, you don’t only want to drive to the top, you would also like to say that you actually climbed it, right? However, adjusting to the elevation, a tight vacation schedule and your climbing experience might limit your choices which one of the 54 peaks you can choose from.

We like to recommend Quandary Peak. It is close to Breckenridge, 14,265 feet high and a 7 miles’ round-trip hike. The trail is well-marked and it’s a beautiful adventure for the entire family.

.
2. Raft the Arkansas River

There is no better way to experience the real Colorado than by floating through the remote mountain scenery on exciting and incredible clean whitewater. Good companies offer trips for all levels and ages. If your littlest one’s couldn’t make it to the top of Quandary Peak, the Milk Run might be the right trip for them.

Many families with kids older than 6 years choose the excitement of rafting through Browns Canyon National Monument. Groups who look for even more thrill than the legendary Zoom Flume rapid should sign up for The Numbers. River rafting outfitters with experienced guides can also offer expert trips, like Pine Creek, to the right group.

If you’re staying in Breckenridge or the Summit County area you don’t even need a car to go rafting! The Adventure Company has daily pickups with multiple convenient locations in Summit County. This way you can relax in a comfort shuttle and enjoy the beautiful scenery on your way to the country’s best rafting.

3. Go Mountain Biking

There is a reason you see mountain bike trails everywhere. It’s because Colorado offers some of the best mountain biking there is. Depending on your adventure level, you could either rent a bike and explore the trails around Summit County by yourself or sign up to let a real expert show you the world of mountain biking in Colorado.

4. See a Gold Mine

Nobody can say they really experienced the Wild West if they haven’t learned about the historic gold rush in Colorado. Country Boy Mine is conveniently close to Breckenridge and besides showing you the mine you get a chance to wash gold and to meet a real miniature donkey.

5. Watch at Least One Sunset

Ever wonder how Instagram came up with all these pretty filters? We are pretty sure that their main inspiration came from Colorado’s spectacular sunsets. Find a pretty spot around Lake Dillon and just enjoy the magic. Also, this might be just the right opportunity to take a new group picture with your loved ones. Of course you can use the “#nofilter – hashtag” for these beautiful memories!
