Colorado Adventures for every month of the year 2017
New Year’s Resolution? How about New Year’s adventure planning!?
We would like to recommend fun activities for every month of 2017. Our ultimate adventure calendar should help you to make the right decisions in the New Year. 😉
Considering that following our advice guarantees fun memories with your family and/or friends in the Colorado outdoors, this might be the only self-help article you need. In addition, you get to burn some calories too.
Colorado has so many great ski resorts, make sure you get out on the slopes. Find the right resort for your family and if you decide to head into the backcountry we recommend a backcountry safety class. You can’t know enough about safety in the backcountry and it’s always fun too!
Snowmobiling is one of the most fun winter activities for thrill seekers. No lines, no crowds; just you and your group, a snowmobile, and the beautiful wilderness.
White Mountain Tours in Leadville is located in the Colorado high country. From family adventures on groomed trails to extreme tours for more experienced single riders, there is a snowmobile adventure for everyone.
Cross Country Skiing & Snow Shoeing!
Explore Colorado’s snowy trails at your own pace. Rent snow shoes or cross country skies and go on a little adventure. Snow shoeing and cross country skiing are the best ways to find remote spots and sometimes even wildlife.
Recommended rental locations:
In Buena Vista: The Trailhead
April is the most heavily fished month of the year, due to the caddis fly hatch that jumpstarts the season. This hatch begins near Cañon City in mid-April and steadily moves upriver towards Salida and Buena Vista as water temperatures warm up to around 54°F.
Fly fishing is one of Colorado’s most popular outdoor activities for a reason.
Enjoy this true Colorado experience with your loved ones.
Camping out West! & Sledding on Sand!
Take your family on an adventure out West!
Explore the shores of the Colorado River around Colorado National Monument or get even more adventurous and hike through Rattle Snake Canyon. May is the perfect time of the year to camp out in Colorado’s desert.
Sledding on Sand!
You can also consider a day trip to southern Colorado. A Great Sand Dune National Park day trip is something you will never forget!
Feel like a Star Wars character and bring sleds & old snowboards to play in the sand.
Overnight Rafting Trips!
(recommended from June to mid August)
Multi day raft trips are an incredible way to take full advantage of the river, canyons and spectacular mountain views that our beautiful state has to offer. With full days of rafting and your choice of either sleeping under the stars or on a comfortable high-end mattress at A Riverhouse Lodge, there is a right trip for everyone.
We can confidently claim that memories made on overnight trips beat Disney Land and cruise ship memories. It’s a true experience of bonding with your group, your guide, nature and yourself!

Colorado and especially the Arkansas River offer some of the world’s best rafting.
Browns Canyon National Monument is one of the most popular trips! The unique combination of exciting whitewater, spectacular canyon scenery, views of some of Colorado’s highest mountains and opportunities to spot wildlife make this the ideal rafting trip. Exciting enough for seasoned paddlers, but not too scary for first-timers. You will want to bring your friends and family for epic rapids such as Pinball, Zoom Flume, and Big Drop!
However, we have rafting adventures for every group and desired excitement level. From the Milk Run; a gentle flow for kids as young as 2 years, to our advanced Numbers trip, we have a trip for everyone.
We are proud to say that our team of experienced guides allows us to run some of the hardest expert trips in the country too.
Our Adventure coordinators are going to recommend the best trip for your group and you will love this true Colorado whitewater experience!

Hike a 14er!
(recommended from June to September)
It’s not the mountain we conquer but ourselves. – Edmund Hillary
Colorado has 58 peaks over 14,000 feet. Some of them are for expert mountaineers only but there are plenty of family friendly 14ers out there. There is nothing like the feeling of making it to the top of a Colorado mountain.
Inhale the thin air, enjoy the views and be proud of yourself!
Special suggestion for the best adventure getaway:
A Riverhouse Lodge is the perfect summer adventure base camp. We are located next to some of some of Colorado’s highest mountains. This cluster of fourteeners includes Mt. Princeton, Mt. Harvard, Mt. Yale, and Mt. Columbia.
Come raft with us one day, hike the next day and ask our adventure coordinators about other activities like ATVing, zip lining, scenic train rides, horseback riding and much more!
(recommended from June to September)
Inflatable Kayak trips make a terrific alternative to hard-shell kayak tours for those wanting to try something new, but not ready to hop in a kayak. These boats are easy to paddle and maneuver, making them a great choice for novice to expert paddlers. Depending on your skill level, physical fitness and ability to swim there are several different river stretches to choose from. Our experienced office staff will help you choose the whitewater section that meets the needs of your group. The variety of whitewater in Colorado makes it the perfect environment for inflatable kayak trips.
The Adventure Company’s guides can help navigate some of the most famous whitewater on the Arkansas River.
Inflatable Kayak trips are small with an emphasis on personal attention (4 guests to one guide).

(recommended in July and August)
The Arkansas River is one of Colorado’s major rivers and also provides miles and miles of excellent fishing. This river is famous for the Mother’s Day Caddis Hatch, when anglers from all around come looking for hungry Brown Trout snacking on the caddis flies. The Adventure Company offers fly and spin fishing trips and also the opportunity to wade or float.
Experience the luxury of a guided fishing trip where you will be shown the best places to land the trophy Trout you have been searching for.
Colorado’s landscape is truly a mountain bikers dream. Every valley offers a great amount of well maintained trail systems through beautiful mountain scenery. Mountain biking allows you to get faster to the best views, improve your fitness and enjoy the thrill of riding downhill.
September is one of the best months for mountain biking, the trails are dry and the landscape is about to become colorful.
If you’re looking for guided mountain bike adventures give us a call and we’re happy to recommend the best company in your area.
If you want the thrill and views without having to ride up the mountain, zip lining might be the right adventure for you.
At White Mountain Tours, trained and certified zip line guides will accompany you on the tour. The course has five separate zip lining sections, each with entirely different elements of speed, height and terrain, with cables up to 850 feet, some more than 300 feet off the ground.
Fall Color Hiking!
It feels unreal and magical to stroll in fall through the yellow & orange landscape of Colorado. Mallory, Innkeeper of A Riverhouse Lodge and an Adventure Coach can recommend some of the best fall hikes in the area. Check out this post about Ptarmigan Lake trail to get some inspiration!
And consider staying at our lodge for a truly beautiful fall adventure.
Garden of the Gods – Daytrip!
Drive to Garden of Gods visitor center, grab a map of the rock formations and make it a treasure hunt. Who can find the kissing camel rock first?
This attraction is free and the trails are well maintained & easy to explore.
Drive the loop through the park and we can guarantee you some photo worthy views.
A stroll through Manitou Springs downtown is definitely a good idea before you drive back home.
Tubing is a great activity for families and fun seeking adults. We recommend the Frisco Adventure Park for a one-hour tubing experience next to Lake Dillon. If you have a Keystone ski area lift ticket, we highly recommend their tubing hill. This way you get to enjoy scenic mountain views while tubing.
Both attractions offer a magic carpet so you don’t waste your time and energy running up the mountain and get to enjoy as many rides as possible.
We hope that our adventure calendar can help inspire you!
Here at The Adventure Company we believe that everyday we can all do something to make or our life an adventure. Whether its taking a new route home from work, trying out a new restaurant, or going whitewater rafting in Colorado, we should all look for new ways to spice up our lives.
