Summer in the Rocky Mountains offers incredible outdoor activities- from hiking and biking, to soaking in hot springs, but the highlight for many is whitewater rafting. Colorado in particular offers some of the best whitewater raft trips for both children and adults alike. The rushing water, breathtaking views, and pure fun make these adventures unforgettable and create lifelong memories. Here are a few highlights of a family-friendly raft trip in Colorado from a mom of 2 young kids:
- Scenery– There is nothing like seeing a sense of wonder in our kids when they are experiencing something new. The wilderness of Colorado brings that feeling to life, and watching your child soak in the beauty of their surroundings is truly priceless.
- Wildlife- First, it’s important to understand that animals pose no risk to guests floating on the river. Commonly seen animals are bighorn sheep, bald and golden eagles, mule deer, elk and mergansers. Less commonly, you may spot moose, bears or even mountain lions. Keeping an eye out for animals keeps kids interested in everything around them.
- Whitewater- There are real whitewater trips designed for kids as young as 2! These aren’t simple “float” trips, they include easy whitewater while still remaining low risk. We know it can be challenging to find vacation activities suitable for young children, so having three beginner whitewater option to choose from is truly fantastic!
- Engagement- We know kids have an expiration date for activities, so keeping them engaged throughout the trip as they move down the river working as a team is important. All of our recommended trips are the perfect length for young children- long enough to be exciting, but short enough to keep them interested the whole way.
