The Arkansas River is buzzing this season, and despite the chatter about lower water levels, the message from the river is clear: the adventure is just getting started.
Recently, our very own Mark Hammer, owner of The Adventure Company, was featured in the news by the Summit Daily (and appearing in Aspen and Steamboat too!) discussing the outlook for the 2026 rafting season.
“Steady Flows and Strong Reservations”
As Mark shared with the reporter, reservations are strong. While the snowpack might be lower than a typical year, the Arkansas River, particularly our bread-and-butter stretches like Browns Canyon remains a premier destination for whitewater enthusiasts and families alike.

The “Technical” Truth About Low Water
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that lower water means “mellow” or “boring.” As Mark explains in the article, it’s actually the opposite.
“Every piece of water is different,” Mark noted. In lower flows, the river becomes more technical. Rapids that are usually washed over by high water suddenly reveal their true character. You’ll find more obstacles to navigate, clearer water, and drops that can actually feel bigger because there’s less water to smooth them out. It’s a precision game that our experienced guides love to play.
Want More Splash? Try a “Duckie.”
For those seeking that extra thrill when the river is technical, we’ve got the perfect solution: Inflatable Kayaks (Duckies). Being lower to the water and in control of your own craft makes every ripple an adventure. It’s the ultimate way to leverage the river’s unique features this season.
Escape the Heat and Earn Your Memories
With temperatures expected to soar this summer, there is no better place to be than on the water. Whether you’re coming from Denver, Breckenridge, or out of state, the Arkansas River Valley offers a cool, scenic escape from the heat.
At the end of the day, rafting is about more than just the CFS (cubic feet per second). It’s about the experience getting outdoors, spending time with friends and family, and taking in the breathtaking views of the canyon.
Buena Vista: Your Perfect Weather Advantage
One of the reasons the Arkansas River is so popular in Buena Vista is that the town is located in an alpine desert environment, which is the perfect climate for enjoying the outdoors. Warmer and drier than Breckenridge, but cooler than Denver and much of the country, the comfortable climate typically has summertime high temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. With low humidity and very little rain, this is the perfect climate for outdoor adventure!
